Southern Threads,
Northern Footsteps
Two film projects are
under way! Thanks to the
Arts Council of
Indianapolis, I am currently
working on the final phase
of my film "Southern
Threads, Northern
Footsteps". This short film
was inspired by
researching my family
history in the Southern
United States and
uncovers memories that
made me the artist I am .
Look for the film to be
released soon. Visit my
website for updates!
The painting to the left is
called "Deep Roots" and
was created during my
Creative Renewal
Fellowship.

Two Men, Two Worlds: Beyond Black and White
About this project
When I was young, our family used to make annual trips to the small
Mississippi town where my father was born. As an adult, my father
told me several interesting stories about our family history and gave
me a copy of a census record dating back to the 1850's. Included in
his story was a statement that my great-grandfather had opened a
school in his rural community and that my Dad, many of his family
members and neighbors had attended the school named in my
great-grandfather's honor.
My father died in the 1980's and I later became curious about this
story. About three years ago I discovered that one of the buildings
associated with the school still existed and that this school was one
of the Rosenwald Schools built in 1925. This film will explore the
story of my great grandfather's role in working on the school and will
explore how Julius Rosenwald (founder of Sears and Robuck)
became a major supporter of black schools in the South.

you will support my project by pledging your support. See how you
